And this is cbr12bingo book for Yellow!
Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni was his first book for children. Due to the fact he had rambunctious grandchildren, one day on the train he had to find a creative way to keep them occupied and this book was born. How do I know this? It is in Lionni’s own words at the back of this edition. And who would have thought a book from 1959 would still be in print let alone as beloved now as it has been for many years.
The book is a concept book: two friends (blue and yellow) are so happy to see each other, they hug and make green. This causes some issues at home but is quickly solved. Little Blue and Little Yellow is a clever way to introduce the mixing of colors to create another color.
The artwork is extremely simplistic (just colored spots throughout) there is no detail other than the color. This feels as if it would have been unusual for the time, very avantgarde so to speak. Therefore, the adult might start thinking about the book, the time it was written, why has it lasted and more deeply than the story itself. Of course, kids will just get a kick out of the fact blue and yellow made green! There is nothing more to it than just a simple color situation.
I judge the strength of a book not by how many awards it has won, but how many editions it has had. And when you get your board book. This book is available in paper, board book and hardcover. Therefore, this book should be a keeper as it has been loved by many and allowed the board book format to introduce it to the young crowd that first can benefit from it.
