CBR 12 Bingo – Adaptation
So I chose this one for Adaptation, because I watched it late night on tv and thought it was a truly, truly terrible movie. And it is! It’s really awful. The book is also not great exactly, but it had some goals that the movie just seemed to shunt off into nothing.
So this book has that issue that a lot of Stephen King books do for me: fully realized and interesting characters and nonsensical or undeveloped central conceit. This one also plays pretty fast and loose with slurs, so watch out. It’s also a weird mix of The Body by one, Stephen King, Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers (but maybe more so Stalker), a Michael Crichton book never writter, and The Thing. All of these are mixed up in relatively unmeasured amounts and stirred together to make this book. Oh, and also it’s kind of a sequel to It. So there’s that too.
So the book involves four friends who grew up together now getting together for their yearly hunting trip in the Maine woods in November. This year’s trip is punctuated by the recent recovery of Jonesy, who was hit by a car and horribly injured. And also Henry is thinking about suicide. Oh and also, they all have a little ESP.
So we also find out that when they were younger, they rescued a boy with Downs Syndrome from bullies, and they became friends with him for years.
Also then we find out that there’s aliens infecting people with a kind of bod-cavity filling monster virus. And the US government is trying to kill everyone.
It’s all mixed up together like that.
