I don’t know what your memories or associations with Don Hertzfeldt is, but he was one of the biggest and most important touchstones for me in terms of humor and college. Others include The Royal Tenenbaums, Homestarrunner, and a few others. I love Don Hertzfeldt and his brand of weird, dark, absurd, but ultimately not hurtful humor has always been the perfect distillation of the last 20 years of (good) humor in comedy.
This book is very similar and is a 100 or more pages of little moments that happen at the end of the world. The end itself is not spelled out and might involve aliens or Eldritch horrors or other kinds of things, or just the end of humanity. So anyway, strange ethereal pictures accompanied by cryptic descriptive text.
I can’t say a lot beyond this because the book is an experience and it was a fun, light, and enjoyable little reading experience. Each picture seems to have been printed on aged or cheap paper with pencil and pen and then photostatted into the book. This sounds cheap, but actually has created a kind of ancient text feel to the book itself. This feels like a testimony book and maybe these kinds of books —- or say the CBR Book club reading of Stattion Eleven will bear out more conversations of a post-capital society when the weather or COVID-19 or whatever finally shakes the foundations enough for things to buckle. At least you can laugh or be a little disturbed as you have those.
