My quick journal entry mentioned the death of Tomie dePaola. I recently found, three new (to me books). I haven’t read Fight the Night, yet, but did get 
a chance to read Marianna May and Nursey along with The Comic Adventures of Old Mother Hubbard and Her Dog.
Many know dePaola as both the author and illustrator of the book. However, he has illustrated several books for others. The Comic Adventures of Old Mother Hubbard and Her Dog was created by Sarah Catherine Martin as well as dePaola. They took the full-length classic rhyme and illustrated it. The cupboard is bare, the dog wears his shoes, plays dead and smokes his pipe. The beloved nursey rhyme has been lovingly reissued from the 1981 original.
While I knew of the Old Mother Hubbard Nursey rhyme, I was not familiar with Marianna May and Nursey. There is not a lot to the story except that Marianna May is a wealthy girl who wears white. And she must always be proper. She cannot roll in the grass or play in the mud. She must stay clean. That is until a friend shows her and Nursey how to have fun with colors and clothes. It is quaint and fun. This is a reissue of his 1983 book.
Both are classic Tomie with a touch of modern. They are a must for fans of dePaola. The art and stories will be relatable to all ages (even adults). And the nice thing about Tomie dePaola is, we may not be getting anything new from him, but we can always count on the classics allowing us to get our fix, reissues to help us find new books and the fact we can always introduce him to the next generation.
