Finding the right book at the right time is rarely easy, but it is fun. I was cleaning up some reader copies that got out of place and picked up Five Fuzzy Chicks. Now, it had been a long month all week, I needed something to counter that and what I found was Diana Murray and Sydney Hanson’s picture book.
This is a cute rhyming story that is perfect for a bedtime (or anytime). It follows five little chicks who are not ready for bed. While the other animals are hunkering down, the chicks run run run run! That is, until the dog’s head is too soft, the hay too warm, and so forth, and each chick falls asleep. This count down from five to one will become a favorite with your own little fuzzy chicks (and your children, too).

The illustrations are A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E! They are almost sugary sweet. They are every classic bedtime you had read to you as a child. They are your favorite worn shirt (that has the color of being new, but the comfy of lots of love wearing). There are perfect details, without going to in depth. Kids will love the chicks as they run, have fun and finally sleep when done peeping.
While a regular sized picture book this will be a big hit when it goes into a lap sized board book. Or I should say, it should be a board book as it lends itself to that oversized board book format. Can be adapted to fit all ages (the youngest to be read too and the slightly older who are reading with help).
