Selena is a downright gorgeously illustrated book by Paola Escobar. Silvia Lopez’s text hits on the 
highlights of the singer’s life. Each page is a short chapter into a piece of her life. The two pieces blend together; complimenting each other and bring to life the world, the looks and the sound of Selena. There is not only the world inside the home and on the stage, but the neighborhood and people as well.
The afterwards dealing with everything from definitions and explanations of terms, the people and places along with a timeline of Selena’s main events, complete the story and tie everything together in a neat and information filled, package. The only mention of her death is in the
timeline and a small afterwards talking about the events yet handled very tastefully.
Due to the picture book format the older child, which it is aimed at, might be turned off but it is a great book for probably up to 10-years-old (though a young 10). Might be a hard read-aloud for the younger crowd, but the set up allows for a page a night reading. There is little traditional action, Lopez shows with their text that Selena designed clothes, her brother wrote songs, etc. There is no “action” where there are “car chases” or “danger” to keep you moving. Perhaps, it might make you interested in learning about her music (as I learned a few things about her: I was unaware she spoke little Spanish so she memorized the songs, many awards and honors came after her death and even one of her most popular songs was released also after her death. Plus, how much she missed out on due to her starting her career at such a young age. She did not even have her Quinceanera).
You see a person who seems to be a decent human being. She did not seem to have the scandals surrounding her (such as her love life or addictions) that other celebrates who were as young as she was would/could have had. You can tell Lopez is a fan of her subject. I saw Selena as someone who was not just a role model for Latina women, women in general or Latino people, but as a role model for anyone due to her spirit and determination.
