Deja and Josiah (Josie) are seasonal best buds, working together at the local pumpkin patch for the last few years. During that time Josie has had a mad crush on the fudge girl, and since it’s their last night working before they go off to college, Deja decides it’s her mission to get Josie to at least talk to the object of his affection.
Their quest takes them all around the pumpkin patch, and attractions they haven’t experienced for themselves because they’ve been working. They’re soon ditching their last shifts to chase fudge girl around the patch, eating kettle corn and freeto pies and getting lost in the corn maze. And maybe Josie will discover the fudge girl isn’t all that after all…
I am a big Rainbow Rowell fan but not so much a graphic novel one, so while I found this cute I’d much rather it had been fleshed out into a novel so I could have got to know the characters on more than a surface level. Although I suppose story-wise there’d have to be much more to it for that to make sense. I liked both characters well enough but other than they both work at the pumpkin patch and their dating histories there’s not much more that we learn about them. It’s also pretty predictable in terms of plot which is fine if you’re after a standard rom-com kind of thing, but it would have been nice for it to have held a few more surprises. Or a male/female friendship that remained just that.
As someone who doesn’t read many graphic novels I can’t speak much about the art except to say that I liked it and thought the depiction of the (insanely huge) pumpkin patch was fun. I would definitely go to something like that if there was one near me.
For me this was a sweet and quick read but not one I’m likely to return to.
