How Do You Dance? is a modern story about how everyone has their own way of dancing. Some people are graceful, others not so much. Some dance in groups and others alone. But no matter how you dance, just getting out and dancing is the thing to do! Thyra Heder created a clever way to get a child reading as well as a’ movin’ and a’ groovin’!
Heder’s book is just a happy book. It is a bout being you and having fun. Along the way there is a character who seems a little grumpy, not a dancer at all, but soon you learn that even they dance, but like everyone else, they have their own special way. Heder illustrates this picture book with fun, bouncy and bright colors. The details are minimal but all you need are there. Working well for most ages, this could work as a one-on-one book or in a group. However, it is probably not recommended for a bedtime reading, as it should make everyone want to do some bouncin’, dancin’ and shakin’ right then and there! The text is poetic and dances as much as your child will as they read along. Both text and illustrators complement each other.
Heder has also written and illustrated Alfie: The Turtle That Disappeared, Fraidyzoo and The Bear Report. The fun thing I was noticing is that Heder has a slightly similar look to everything, but each cover has its own style. They are also the illustrator of the Penny and Jelly series by Maria Gianferrari.
