The cover to Flower Talk was a bit off-putting at first. I had picked it up to process it for an order a customer had placed, but my 
curiosity got the better of me (I admit it, I look at customers books. I have found a few interesting things that way). A few minutes later I found a new book to enjoy. Sara Levine will now be on my radar for authors to watch for.
Flower Talk is an amusing, factual and gorgeously illustrated picture book about plants and their flowers. It is told from the point of view of an adorable, but slightly cranky, cactus. The true meaning of flowers (why they are the colors they are/red does not mean romance/etc.) come to light. The afterwards and information about environmental issues/ways to help plants and the insects is included at the end.
And while the cover illustration was a bit off-putting at first, it and the inside art grew on me. There are some beyond amazing colors. And while they are bold, bright and slightly surreal even, the tone is at the same time soft and poetic. There is even some “adult humor/comments” without being inappropriate (one flower has a hand wafting out, finger posed to call/tease out to their insect to come and have a drink/take part of the pollen transferring). Masha D’Yans will now be on my artistic radar as well. I might investigate getting their 2021 calendar. While the book itself is not “folktale” some of their other art is. Therefore, if you are not a fan of these illustrations, explore their other work.
Accessible for most ages (5 and up; even adults) can learn about the wild world of flowers.
