I admit it, I hate Baby Shark. That nonsense makes me wonder about the future of American children. Therefore, I only picked up this easy reader, Baby Shark: Baby Shark and the Balloons, out of a morbid curiosity to see how they could write a story about “doo-doo-doo”. However, I learned that this book is a little funny and mostly well done.
Pinkfong has created just a simple story about Baby Shark being bored as they cannot locate their friends. But of course, there is more to it than that. Baby Shark finds a special way to amuse themselves (with balloons) and not only that, they find a way to find and help their friends along the way, too. Your toddler and early reader will have fun listening to and reading about friendship and it is Baby Shark. And the best part? You will not want to scream over those lyrics. Or lack thereof.
The artwork is pure Baby Shark. There are colors everyplace. They are bold and brassy and saturate every corner. There is basic text that is repeated and occasionally has a rhyming pattern. And while this is a My First (which is for the very beginning reader) I felt that it would not be out of the question for a slightly more advanced reader to do it as well and not feel it was too easy.
Good for a solo read (sometimes with assistance) and could even be read to a younger fan of the Baby Shark franchise. Therefore, ages 3 to 7 will be the best audience.
