Love Monster and the Scary Something by Rachel Bright stars the Love Monster from 2013’s Love Monster and 2015’s Love Monster
and the Last Chocolate and 2014’s Love Monster and the Perfect Present. This time Love Monster is getting ready for bed, but no matter how hard they try, they cannot get to sleep! And as it gets later and later, Love Monster starts to hear sounds. Which, thankfully, can be figured out quickly enough. That is, until that one sound they cannot figure out. What could it be? When one over active imagination takes over in this quirky, sweet and familiar bedtime story the fun really starts!
The art of Bright is absolutely delightful. It is simple, not overly detailed, but everything you and your child need to move the story along is there. There are deep, right colors, there is goofiness on every page. And there is an adventure that compliments the text. The thoughts and fears of Love Monster come to life. Yet, you the reader know things are not always what they seem. And as you move along the pages, you quickly learn that sometimes there can be a lovely surprise that comes from the unknown.
I recently reviewed The Lion Inside and The Squirrels Who Squabbled by Bright. I was not loving them as much as I would have liked, but this time, even though we have seen the “bump in the night scary sounds overcoming our fears” stories, there is something charming about it. It makes me rethink the other books and I just might give them another chance. Or ten, depending on how many other books are out there and what is coming.
