Hawkeye, Volume 2: Little Hits by Matt Fraction
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
We get more background info on Hawkeye/Clint Barton in this volume. We still don’t know what all the hints about, “you don’t know what he’s been up to” are about, but I’m guessing it has something to do with his days as Ronin.
Superstorm Sandy shows up, as well as Ironman, Black Widow, Mockingbird, and Jessica Jones. I didn’t know Jessica Jones was in the Hawkeye universe, but then again I’m still new to all of this. I knew that Hawkeye helps bring Black Widow into the Avengers and SHIELD so I wasn’t surprised to see her here. I had to look up the Bobbi character and she’s apparently Mockingbird and Hawkeye’s ex-wife. It was nice to meet more superheroes because it fleshes out the web of people Hawkeye is involved with.
This volume humanizes Clint. He helps a neighbor in a storm and he has this amazing dog. I do think there’s too much “poor me, I’m a tortured soul who can’t find love” in this volume. I’m not so much into all that as it reminds me of when Bruce Wayne gets moody. Emo superheroes aren’t my thing. I do appreciate that a lot of supporting characters don’t buy into the victim attitude and while they offer their help, they also don’t stick around for his pity party.
The villain, The Clown, shows up and just confirms why I’m terrified of clowns in general. I’m looking forward to the next several volumes to see how the story arch gets developed and resolved.
