Forgive Yourself These Tiny Acts of Self-Destruction has strong imagry. Jared Singer evokes great feelings with each poem. Perhaps you are not familiar with the subjects (not
having experienced them personally) but they will speak to you. Perhaps you do not understand what you are feeling or even why you are feeling what you are feeling, but you will feel something. Just not something I can tell you what it might be. A poem that touched me might not you and of course, the reverse is true, too. This is a personal book. Not only for Singer himself, but for the reader as well.
This is a book of poetry that you experience on your own level. And while some concepts might not be, at first, known, most poems are in accessible language. While poetic, most of the poems are not “flowery” or “too artsy” for most people. While this might not be the best “first book of poetry” to start with, it is not the worst either. Singer seems a simply complex person and his poems reflect it. He talks about his body, his life, his friends, death and lovers. You laugh, cry, wonder, are happy, sad, angry and more.
This is Singers debut collection, though he has been in the poetry scene for a decade. His thoughts on body image, body positivity, anxiety, depression and even suicide have been done before, but this voice is giving you a personal journey that might help you on yours. Having heard a few of Singers poems read by him (via video), his edge comes out in both hearing and seeing.
