I love books like this. I feel like it’s a common writing style these days, and I like it. We flip back and forth between the current time when two high school sweethearts are visiting their daughter at boarding school. There’s a presentation of a new writer in residence who’s teaching a journalism course. They learn that the teacher plans to have his class investigate the death of a previous writer in residence whose body was newly discovered.
Unfortunately the parents (Andi and Ian) knew the dead teacher, and had close (to put it mildly) interactions with him. Cassidy (the daughter), Andi and Ian do most of the talking for the present time. We learn the suspects the class is talking to, what was possibly happening back in the past, and some interesting info about the parents. Most of the past info comes from Andi and Ian’s senior year journal writings. This is what I thought was done really well. We get to see what each of them are going through as they go through it, then we flash back to how it affected them in the present.
We learn that Andi was having an affair with the (now dead) teacher. She and Ian had broken up at the time, and Ian was devastated. Throughout the book you’re not sure if Andi or Ian killed the teacher. They both had pretty good motives.
Then a new character is arrested for the murder. Cassidy thinks he’s innocent, and she sets out to prove it. Andi and Ian are keeping secrets that could tear them apart. I like the way this ended, and I thought it was well written. I’d definitely recommend it!
