Hey you readers! Paul McCartney (yes that Paul McCartney, you know the cute one) has, along with
Kathryn Durst, created a picture book called Hey Grandude!
It is a cute and fun story about a grandfather whose pack of grandchildren call him Grandude. And they love visiting him, but one day things just do not feel right. And like most grandfathers, Grandude knows what to do. He grabs his compass, a handful of postcards and with these words, “See the compass needle spin, let the magic fun begin!” they are off on an adventure or two. While they are fun adventures, they are not in the most educational format. But that is not the point of the story; which is to just have fun, explore and be together.
This is not a very traditional story but does have classic elements. It is for the modern reader and family dynamic. In some places it might be too “sweet” for some, but overall Hey Grandude! should have a broad appeal. Aimed at ages 4 and up, really anyone could find something in it to enjoy. You do not even have to be a fan of the Beatles or McCartney himself. And as far as celebrity books go, it might not become a classic, but it is a solid read.
The illustrations of Durst also are clever, fun and quirky. Realistic, but not “real” you see the world in bright colors and pages filled to the top with details. Each page shows the story and the personality of the characters and there are a few jokes as well. A fun anytime story that you can read text and illustrations.
