I wasn’t quite sure what to read for the Banned Book #CBR11Bingo square. And then my friend George shared an article about an Irving school district recently banning the comic book, Love is Love. It was sad and frustrating to learn. A tribute to the victims of the Orlando Pulse shooting was censored for “extreme homosexuality” by close-minded educators. I knew instantly I had to read this collection and review it for my first ever bingo. The book may be banned, but the message won’t be silenced. Love in all forms between all humans will continue to find a way to shine.
Patty Jenkins pens the moving introduction for the comic and discusses her film Monster also set in Florida. Most of the comics have an uplifting message of course about love. I did shed a few tears while reading about the text messages never answered by some of the victims.
My favorite comics within the collection tended to be more visual and abstract tributes.
It was also fun to see superhero queer characters on the page.
Parts of the book were simply some authors processing their feelings and musings on the event. I liked how personal and touching the entire book felt. It was born out of the desire to find light in the darkness of a tragedy. The book has raised over $165,000 for the victims. It’s shameful something with such heart has been censored. I grew in Texas and hoped for more compassion. Even tho I have seen racism and homophobia there, I truly believe hate is in the minority. This graphic novel only cemented my belief. This is a wonderful tribute to love and I highly recommend it to everyone of all ages.
