An adorable little mouse gets ready to go to the barn with his mother and siblings in Jeff Smith’s Little Mouse Gets Ready: TOON Level 1. And
yes, this is Bone Jeff Smith and RASL Jeff Smith. And again, that guy has quite the range on him for different styles.
This time we have a little mouse all excited to go to the barn with his family. Mother Mouse calls to if from off page to see if he is ready. He tells her in a few minutes. Breaking the fourth wall (or perhaps talking to himself) we see mouse first put on the undies (they are easy), the socks and finally the pants (he has to sit down for that). But then it is onto the shirt which gives him some trouble (buttons you know are bigger than the hole they go through). Eventually he gets it and now he is all ready to run off and enjoy all the fun things in the barn…. Or is he?? A silly twist happens in this graphic novel format for an early to mid-level reader.
I was expecting something someone, well frankly, sophomoric. But Smith created a story that is amusing (such as making sure you put your tail in the tail hole) and the mere fact those socks are so not this little mouse’s socks! The colors are not overly bright, but they give color when and were needed and help move the story along. They are sweet and funny to match the text. Overall, this book is just a good, fun read. Available in hardcover and paper.
