Do you know the second Home Alone movie? Then you know the book, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York by Kim Smith. As I have not seen the movie (the first was more than enough for me) I am assuming that the major highlights of Kevin, lost in New York City on Christmas, are touched upon (especially since the publisher copy says this book is “based on the story written by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus”).
Perhaps people will like a male, modern-Eloise, but I was never a fan of the original Eloise, therefore, I am not a fan of this book. I also figured the antics of beating the tar out of the bad-guys was fully covered in the first book. It is the illustrations that are interesting here.
They are all modern, brightly colorful and flat. Kim Smith is the illustrator for several of these “movie and television to book” books. And while they can be fun for a once read, they tend not to be a re-read. Unless you are an adult fan of the Home Alone movies. A little nostalgia is always great for the holidays. Especially since you can get the First Home Alone, X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Karate Kid, Back to the Future and more. There are even several Property Brothers tiles (if you think they are cuties as adults, wait until you see them as kids).
While I personal did not jump-up-and-down over Home Alone 2, I appreciate the hard work and time that goes into them. I would see if your local library has a copy, then decide if it needs a forever home in your home.
