I am a slacker at heart. Even though I work hard at my job and try to give a good effort in other endeavors in life, my goal is to just crawl somewhere and be left alone. I love my friends and I love my family, but I have no greater aspiration in this life than to have time to myself.
Murph, the star of Gary Reilly’s Asphalt Warrior series, is a kindred spirit for me. He has a shabby apartment where he grills burgers, watches TV and occasionally reads. Otherwise, he does the bare minimum at his job. And he as a job (cab driver) that specifically allows him to do the bare minimum at life.
I still remember this potential employee expo I went to once. I only did it to get free basketball tickets. And it was one of the most miserable experiences of my life. A bunch of college-age kids going around in suits and business attire carrying their resumes and begging for trash corporate jobs.
Murph had a similar experience and that led him to a low-paying job that allows him the freedom to live his life as he wants, minimal though it is. He is my hero.
Anyway, this is far and away my least favorite of the series, hence the three stars. I didn’t find the case to be particularly interesting and felt like some of the scenes were stretched to pad an already short page count.
But I really like spending time with Murph, who in some ways is my alter ego.
