The two main story points of this Choose Your Own Adventure Spies are radically different. 
One story arc has a supernatural aspect that clashes with the realistic one. And while there are amusing moments, Kyandreia Jones’s story is mostly serious.
In CYOAS: James Armistead Lafayette, you are James Armistead, a literate slave of Virginia. During a fire (that may have been a diversion to help your friend John escape) where you are trying to save your fellow slaves, you are hit on the head by a bucket. When you wake, you find the Marquis de Lafayette himself standing over you. He offers you a way to freedom: either join him and fight with the Revolutionary Army or find your own way. Either way, Lafayette has secured you papers that state you are free. Here the adventures start.
Jones also includes an afterwards which gives historical facts of the time and James Armistead Lafayette himself.
Unfortunately, I did not have as much enjoyment with this one as I have with others of the CYOA series. Like several CYOA books, there were a few bumps in the smoothness of the story, which is to be expected and can easily be overlooked. However, the fact that James Armistead Lafayette is a real historical person and you can “play” with his story took me out of the story. If the character had been based on Armistead Lafayette, then I think I could have suspended any “disbelief” I had. I was looking for the facts of his life and not a truly fictitious setting.
Yet, kids ages (strong) 8 to 12 should get a kick out of this.
