Ava in Code Land is obviously, from the cover and title, a modern story about computers and coding. It is also a classic story about
not giving up and trying even if all seems hopeless. This is all wrapped up with a girl main character called Ava.
Jess Hitchman, Gavin Cullen and Leire Martin put together a picture book that is set in a computer game. A game that Ava loves living in as all she has to do is hit a few keys and what she needs and wants pops up! However, like all good games there is a not so nice baddie, a hacker-pirate Max Hacksalot and his pirate unicorn (seriously, folks, the unicorn has an eye patch and Hacksalot hoodie is a scream). But one day, Ava wakes to find that Hacksalot has created a program that says GAME OVER! And everything is black. Is it really over, or will Ava whip up a clever plan?
The illustrations are completely modern looking. They look as if created on a computer, they have bright and hot colors (blue hair for our gal Ava) and her friend Pixels is well, pixels! It has a modern feel to the text as well. Our main character is female and deals with science. It is not deep (does not go into a lot of the details of coding but it is there). It does show what a video game might look like (points/lives/etc. showing in the corners). And an afterwards that gives a bit of details about coding, resources and what code Ava’s code is based on.
