So I got this book back in April 2017, and I just got around to reading it last month. I guess there was maybe a reason for that! It seemed like it was going to be good, but I really didn’t like it that much. Conveniently though, it fulfills my #Own Voices Bingo square! Jimin Han is a Korean American author, and her main characters are all Korean American.
The main character is a Korean American college student in Pennsylvania who met the love of her life on a school trip to Korea. He gets killed in a revolutionary act while still in Korea, but she’s not sure whether she should believe it or not. Their friend meets up with her and convinces her that he’s still alive, and that they need to get back to Korea and free him from whatever prison is holding him.
Anyway, the “bad guy” is slowly (or maybe quickly) losing his mind and he kidnaps a few college girls as ransom to talk to the president of the US and South Korea. I guess he’s starting a small revolution this whole time? I just didn’t really like any of the characters. I wasn’t all in on their motivations, and I wasn’t exactly sure how everything related. I’m also not entirely sure how it ended either.
Basically I did not like this book, and I don’t recommend it. I guess I could give it 1.5 stars because it’s different? Sorry Jimin Han, I just wasn’t that into this book! #cbr11bingo, #ownvoices
I forgot to mention that this was my first bingo (straight down the middle)!!!
