Princess Truly seems to be a stand-alone series of stories. However, book one I Am a Super Girl has a feel of starting in the middle of the story. You do not realize that she has certain powers and quirks, yet they come out slowly. There seems to be another series from about 2015 (until last year) that possibly, might answer some of the “holes” in this one. Yet, this is a small bump in a cute book for the middle to high first grade reader who likes girls with spunk stories.
Kelly Greenwalt’s text is simple yet gives a few challenges. Therefore, both the beginner can take a little help and a slightly more advance reader can start reading solo as they read about Truly.
Truly is a princess who flies, sparkles and solves problems. Truly goes to a party for a cat, saves said cat, gives her friend confidence and more. The rhyming text makes the story bounce along, allowing the reader (or listener) to easily follow the story. Also, one can believe that Truly and her friends really are flying and sparkling, or you can believe this young gal has one fantastic imagination.
Amariah Rauscher is the illustrator. They like using the perfectly chosen colors to make minimalistic illustrations. We see diverseness in the characters and humor. The artwork tells the story right along with the text, sometimes allowing you to make up your own story. Both goofy (rainbow shooting rocket boots) and sweet (kittens and puppies and flowers) make this even a fun read-aloud as well as a silent self-read.
