I started this book a few weeks back while waiting for a Goodbye Lunch of our long-time accounting person (she is leaving us after 34 years) to start. I put it in my mailbox for safe keeping (after all there was quiche for lunch). Due to the fact I no memory of what happened (except there was this hilarious, realistic, oh-so-typical image of a little kid flushing the toilet while holding up their pants in one hand and not quite covering everything up) I started at the beginning again.
I would then go through Welcome to Morningtown almost four times before I picked up everything, as there is a slight twist to the ending. Which is and is not a surprise. This book is a sweet book about getting up in the morning. Blake Liliane Hellman’s story is all the things you do when you get up: brush teeth, eat breakfast, do chores, get ready for the day in all the various ways we do. It has a Richard Scarry element with the cute, cuddly critters of Steven Henry. If it was not for the literal bathroom humor, there would be very little to make this stand out.
Yet, even with a few continuity issues for me, this is an overall good time for the toddler crowd. It is what I would call “grandparent friendly” (as there is no real drama, issues or “bad things” to happen). And even though there are classically traditional families, there is a modern touch at the end (the slight twist ending).
