CBR11Bingo – Not My Wheelhouse
So when I thought about what kind of book would really count as a not my wheelhouse kind of thing, financial analysis, self-help books, math books, hard science texts are more or less what comes to mind. But I really didn’t want to read those. So instead, I picked what I would maybe consider as far removed from my wheelhouse in terms of fiction (other than hard-right military bullshit, which I didn’t feel like, because I didn’t want to get angry, or pulpy Christian books for similar reasons).
So paranormal teen romance it is! And what better than Twilight.
Twilight is a book that inhabits a purely reactive space in my consciousness before now. I always knew what people thought about it, but didn’t really know much about it (outside of the basics of the story).
It’s clear that the most virulent of its critics simply hate teenage girls. Because while it’s not particularly good, it’s also not egregiously awful. It has a lot of the same issues as many YA novels — there’s the way too alluring, way too smart, and totally chaste lead girl that many books have! She’s already read the assigned reading!!!! And then there’s the boy who’s obsessed with her, would kill for her, and would never hurt her (read: chaste).
So I get it, I guess. As a 37 year old, I am limited in what I could get out of this, but now I have read it. I probably won’t be reading on, because some of it’s too silly for words, but it’s fine.
