Finally buckling down to write this review. I finished the book two and a half months ago, so it’s not going to be my best.
Steel’s Edge is the last book in The Edge series, a fantasy/romance set of books that focus on the Edge, a place on the border between our reality (which they call the Broken) and a magical world (called the Weird). Our hero is Richard Mar, the brother of Kaldar from book three. Richard is on a self-imposed quest to wipe out slavers and human trafficking in the Weird, although I can’t remember why he’s so intent on that (two and a half months). Our heroine is Charlotte de Ney, who has been living in the Edge after running away from her former life (I remember this part but it’s spoilers). They are both pretty smitten with each other right away when they meet, which is because of something horrible. They end up on sharing Richard’s quest.
Mostly what I remember about this book is that it got pretty dark in places, to the point where I wasn’t sure how they were going to be able to successfully pull off a Happily Ever After (or Happily For Now). The topics of slavery and human trafficking is bleak enough on its own, but Charlotte’s powers go to a scary place pretty much right away, and Richard’s devotion to his quest has changed him.
Also of note is that my favorite kids, Jack and George, return here. I’m very happy with the way the Andrews used those boys throughout the series. Good character growth for both of them, and they were always fun to read. I’m definitely glad that I’ll get to see them again when I get to the Innkeeper Chronicles.
