Teenage, Pakistani American Kamala Khan’s turn as Ms. Marvel and Squirrel Girl drew us into the Marvel comic books. Previously we were primarily familiar with the Marvel movies. Then Into the Spider-verse came out and we went to find the Miles Morales comics that inspired the animated movie. In our last trip to the library we came across the All-New, All-Different Avengers which features both Ms. Marvel and Mile’s Spider-man. This graphic novel starts with a standalone comic featuring Scarlet Witch and Vision and then issues one through six of the All-New, All-Different Avengers comics.
This book has me pretty excited for where the Marvel Cinematic Universe could head based on what is happening in the comics the past couple of years. If you haven’t seen Avengers: Endgame there is a potential spoiler about a character in the New Avengers. If you have seen Endgame, you will recognize the differences between where the Marvel Cinematic Universe has gone verses where the comic books are. You have been warned.
Wanda Maximof, Scarlet Witch, is visited by Vision (a synthezoid – in all respects a human being but made of artificial materials). Vision has been experiencing a meshing of all his memories and re-experiencing parts of his life. While being disoriented in this way was difficult enough, it also caused confusion when attempting to do a rescue. He could hear the screams of the current person in distress, as well as many other times he had been in similar situations, and in the confusion he failed to rescue the person who actually needed help. To Wanda’s dismay, Vision determines he needs to purge his emotions.
Shifting gears we go to Sam Wilson, no longer Falcon, he has taken on the mantle of Captain America. He still has his wings but now also the iconic Captain America shield and falcon companion named Redwing. Sam is dealing with the new expectations of being Cap, and due to his being black, how his every move is being scrutinized to examine if it was racially motivated. As a result of money problems from being in space for so long (unknown to me as to why, it is only briefly mentioned in this comic), Tony Stark has sold Avengers Tower in New York City. Technically the Avengers no longer exists as a group.
However, inside the ex-Avenger tower evil is brewing, a Chitauri named Warbringer has come to Earth. Miles Morales, teenager and current Spider-man in the comics, happens to be investigating the tower in his invisible mode and witnesses what is happening. A fight immediately breaks out and Captain America and Iron Man quickly become involved, with Vision arriving for an assist. Over in Jersey City, Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel, is hanging out when a giant alien looking monster comes rampaging down the street with Sam Alexander, Nova, hot in pursuit. Kamala and Sam are both in high school and their interaction at the end of subduing the creature is of teenagers trying to navigate an awkward situation and therefore is very relatable.
It’s not long before Ms. Marvel and Nova become involved with the hunt to stop Warbringer’s plans. In the second encounter with Warbringer, Thor (who is now a woman that bears the mantle of Thor and wields Mjolnir) arrives to help contain the Chitauri threat. The group quickly realize that they must all work together to be able to defeat Warbringer. And thus the all new, all different Avengers assemble: Iron Man, new Captain America, new Spider-man, new Thor, Ms. Marvel, Nova, and Vision. But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows as more is going on than meets the eye.
I quite liked this all new, all different group of Avengers. It was neat having two of our new favorite heroes being part of the team-up. Having a mix of teenagers and adults leads to interesting group dynamics. It’s nice that there is a bit more racial diversity. All New, All Different Avengers Vol. 1: The Magificent Seven is a fun read and has me curious as to where this team up goes in the next two volumes. I give it 3.5 stars.
Ysakitty:
The All New, All Different Avengers is a fantastic read. When Nova and Ms. Marvel met…..I hope that doesn’t happen to many people. It was just so awkward with Nova wanting to impress Ms. Marvel but failing at it. While Ms. Marvel was thinking that Nova was just a jerk. This book has romance among several characters. The action was great! In one battle I was happy as a geek to see each character showing off their main personality and trait. Differences can lead to a better team. I like the thrilling adventure, along with the awkwardness, and give it a solid 4. I plan on reading it again.
