New Year, same trash is another book I discovered on Kindle unlimited. It is by one of favorite writers at the moment, Samantha Irby. It is a list of 70 resolutions, what she calls micro resolutions, that she basically fails at one after the other. It’s very funny. She’s a funny writer. I’m kind of bummed I didn’t get to listen to it as an audiobook since I like her voice even more than her writing, but such as life.
“48. Try to think positively. Can’t. Everything is garbage.
49. Stop talking (so much) shit. See above.”
Her resolutions are very relatable. We have all promised ourselves that we’re going to start a journal, go to more concerts, catch up on various podcasts and television shows. And we have also totally failed at a lot of these things. It is the way that Kirby fails that cracks me up. For instance, resolution number 39 is “make my lunch every day”. Irby writes, ” how do you people who do this on the regular actually get it done? Because I can have a freezer for stuff with Amy’s meals, and I still have to stick a Post-It note on the door so I don’t forget to grab one on the way out. Are you guys really making sandwiches in the morning? HOW DO YOU DO THAT?”
Answer: we aren’t. None of us are. We’re not making our lunches or swimming three times a week or keeping our houses clean. But at least we’re all failing together.
