People are going to just love The Little Guys by Vera Brosgol. It is a message book with the message of teaching people not to be greedy and to learn how to be happy with what you have, but also how to be kind and share. There are cute and fun illustrations as you follow The Little Guys as they bully, take what is not theirs and be downright, all around, bad scoundrels.
However, this story has been done before. There are no surprises. The adult reader knows that The Little Guys are going to get too greedy and there will be a (literal) downfall for them. The child, however, most likely will not get that right away. They will enjoy the story itself.
And most people will enjoy the illustrations. As The Little Guys tackle everything and anything, their story unfolds so readers can enjoy the visual goofiness, but also see their too much mightiness. And when their downfall does occur, how the other animals of the forest react (without the text telling you too much), is another message as well. The colors are bold and bright without being overpowering. But it’s the details that will really get you. The details are an odd combination of way too much, but also just the right amount. The contradiction, however, works perfectly for the story.
Brosgol is also known for her middle to young adult reads, Be Prepared and Anya’s Ghost (both are graphic novels). Their picture book Leave Me Alone! Has gotten attention, as well as their other works. The nice thing about this author/illustrator is you can always find something to read to suit your tastes.
