I feel like this is a beloved book among the many Poirot titles in part because I know it by name in a way that I don’t for many of the others. I liked it well enough, but not as much as many of the many other books in the series or by Agatha Christie in general. For one, I am not sure I like Colonel Race at all. He doesn’t seem to add a lot to the narratives in my perspective and easily could have been a more a generic character. He’s a strong presence on the novel, but not a particularly important or pleasant one.
I also couldn’t help but feel for all the talk about deaths and the Nile, there’s not a whole lot of either in the book. It takes a long time for the book to develop and to even begin to take shape, which isn’t really that much of an issue, but if it takes a long time to develop, for this one it means the wrap up goes too quickly. So this book falls into one of the common issues I find with Christie novels, the idea outperforms the writing. I also think it means I am probably through with Christie for a little while. As I am writing this, some week and a half after finishing, I am actually forgetting important plot elements, and well, that doesn’t bode too well for what I must have thought about this one as I read it.
