This is the first book in the “DI Amy Winter” series. Somehow I started this series at book one! That literally never happens.
DI Amy Winter is a Detective Inspector in England. She’s working on living up to her father’s reputation as a police officer. He had just recently died, and she found out that he wasn’t her biological father. Unfortunately that meant that her adopted mother wasn’t her biological mother either. Shockingly Amy’s mother is an infamous serial killer named Lillian, who was part of a serial killing team.
Amy starts to have flashbacks about her past after she finds out about Lillian. Her memories are pretty awful, and she really tries not to remember them. Lillian convinces Amy that she will reveal the burial locations of her (and her serial killing partner who’s dead) final three victims. Amy just has to do what Lillian says to get what she wants.
Lillian holds Amy’s secret parentage over her head as blackmail for most of the book. She doesn’t want her friends and colleagues to learn the truth because she’s worried they won’t trust her and they’ll think that she has evil in her blood. Eventually Amy’s secret gets out and she feels like her reputation is ruined. She also finds out that her boss is a kinda shady bitch.
I liked Amy as a character, and I liked the side characters too. A second book just came out a little over a week ago. I’m definitely going to borrow the next book and see how these characters progress.
