Hello to my second unfinished book of the year.
I just recently reviewed and really liked the first one, but this guy just wasn’t worth it. This is the sequel to The Passage and the same apocalypse with roughly the same characters, but you could tell me this was a whole new author and I would 100% believe you. The first book was all about worldbuilding the end of the world and the survival instincts of a wide band of characters. The second book boils down to “ladies be gettin raped (and other lady part adventures)”. It’s bad. I hopped over to the Wikipedia summary and discovered that I would have to sit through the sexual assault of yet ANOTHER female character and just peaced.
Much like The Passage, The Twelve starts you in one time period and then jumps you about a hundred years ahead. Now we get a few chapters of the immediate fallout from the vampire plague when the Pretty Teenage Survivor bats her eyes at the Soldier In Charge Survivor and asks him to deflower her … and then he dies and she’s pregnant and this is going to Mean Something. The other female character we’re introduced to is a Crazy Pregnant Lady who will factor in significantly. Then jump to the future and Crazy Pregnant Lady is now Crazy Mother Lady and there’s all the rapes and women important because of their child or women who’s whole focus is their child and good lord I just could not do it. Granted, when his whole plot is “apocalypse plague but this time with vampires” I guess I shouldn’t be looking for a whole lot of original storytelling.
Life is short, don’t read shitty books.
