This is a really solid start to what could be a great mystery series. A great option if you just want something fast and twisty that’s also well-written. I think I flew through this one in just a day or two, so it really is quick reading and it was exactly what I was looking for after the heartache of reading American Overdose.
Cat Kinsella is a young detective with the Metropolitan Police Force with, of course, a dark past. She was just a kid when a local girl, Maryanne Doyle, went missing in Ireland where her family was staying with relatives. She knew that things never really added up in the aftermath and has suspected her father had something to do with her disappearance, possibly murder, ever since. Cue years of a rocky relationship with this man who seems to charm everyone except his own daughter.
Things dovetail when Alice Lapaine is found strangled near her dad’s bar and there are connections to the Maryanne case. Cat doesn’t know who to trust and finds herself full of conflict when she ends up prioritizing her dad before the truth and her job. It was painful watching her cross so many lines and lie to her bosses and colleagues, despite her actions being ultimately understandable.
Definitely one to pick up if you want something that’ll keep you guessing and keep you turning the pages. It looks like the sequel will be out soon, maybe July, so I’ll probably be picking up a copy.
