Disney is a “love them or hate them” franchise. However, regardless of my personal feelings anything that makes kids read (even if it is a book about Tinker Belle and fairies) is all right by me!
And this is just that: Disney promoting themselves by using Tink and the gang. By trying to make a girl power book: the girls are not girly and glitter (except for one, but even then, she is pretty tough) and they will go off on an adventure that (spoiler) falls a tiny bit flat as nothing happens. However, ladies and gents that is not the point! The point is: we must keep trying because even if we are good at one thing, even most things, that does not mean we will be good at everything. Even if there is pixie dust to help us fly, we need to practice and work hard. Also, the point is to pay attention to instructions and rules otherwise you will run into the “bad fairy” and she will trick you into stealing said fairy dust.
I am assuming that as this is a group of friends: Kate, Lainey, Mia and her younger sister Gabby, that each book will focus on one girl and an issue she needs to deal with. This one was centered around Kate.
The problem, for me, is obviously Disney The Never Girls book one In a Blink is a plot to get you to go onto the other books in the series. There is no solid “wrap up” that other series have. You know there will be more, but at least this story has a conclusion that makes you feel satisfied. Kiki Thorpe might be a very nice person (if they are not a pen-name for a group of writers) but this writing style fell flat, has missing plot points and is a bit rushed. However, your first grader will be hoping for more and will want to fly off to your nearest bookstore.
