OMG. This is the second series (maybe EVER) that I started at the first book! I don’t remember how I found it, but it might’ve been a Kindle First book.
Ziba Mackenzie is a profiler of Israeli descent who was married to a Scotsman. Her husband had died about a year prior and she was called back into work to profile a new / old / new again serial killer.
She starts out getting into a train crash. Her cop instincts kick in and she starts to try and save people. One lady says “he did it, you have to tell someone” just before she dies. Ziba is obsessed with figuring out what the hell the woman was talking about, and she thinks it’s part of her new case.
There’s a serial killer with the same signature of one over twenty-five years earlier named the London Lacerator. Ziba is on the case and tries to put the pieces together. She’s still reeling from the death of her husband and figuring out her life without him. His best friend is a source of comfort for her and maybe something more.
We get to hear the perspective of the serial killer too. He thinks Ziba is his angel sent to protect him while her continues to lacerate (murder). He goes back and forth between wanting to murder her and thinking she’s his angel. She’s in constant danger while trying to hunt him down and stop him.
I liked these characters too. It’s amazing how I have to use that as a review point. There are so many books / movies / TV shows with shitty characters I don’t care about. Anyway, I care about these characters and I’m excited to read book 2 that comes out in May!
