3.5 stars. This is feel-good young adult lit without being too fluffy about it. It’s YA rom-com with some serious stuff thrown in. Jessie’s mom died a couple years ago and finds herself relocated to California from Chicago, living with a new step-mom and step-brother. She’s going to a fancy private school with a bunch of kids who either ignore her or hassle her and she misses her life from before.
When a mysterious person starts emailing her anonymously offering to help her navigate the school’s social minefield, she isn’t sure whether or not to trust it. She eventually chooses to trust this mystery person and they grow closer and closer despite the anonymity factor.
Jessie is a fun character to spend time with even though her new classmates don’t agree. As someone who moved a few times as a kid, I really felt for her being dropped in a new state and new school, overwhelmed by culture shock. She has the added factor of grief which I can’t even imagine.
Jessie is navigating so much change and doing a pretty good job of it, despite it being such a difficult situation.
I really liked Buxbaum’s approach to the material. She doesn’t skim past the hard stuff, but the book still feels light and fun. An anonymous email correspondence could have come off really creepy, but Buxbaum manages to make it work within the context of the story. She’s juggling so many relationships and doesn’t a pretty great job of resolving each in their own way. Definitely one to pick up if you enjoy the occasional YA rom com.
