3.5 stars. A very interesting read, both from a story standpoint and a writing standpoint. It didn’t totally work for me on every level, but I’m not sorry I read it and I would recommend it.
DO NOT do the audiobook if you’re a frequent podcast listener. The actors they got for the audio version are trying their hardest, they really are. However, the production and delivery weren’t at all like real podcasts so it was hard to stay inside the world of the book. It sounded like these characters were reading a script instead of real people getting interviewed and I couldn’t handle it. Read a hardcopy or ebook and then the production values inside your head can be top notch.
The book is told half from Sadie’s point of view and half as a true crime podcast hosted by West McCray. We get the podcast’s interviews, research, etc as a way to flesh out the story. Sisters Sadie and Mattie have had a hard upbringing with an alcoholic mother and a rotation of stepfathers in and out of their lives. When Mattie is found dead and the police fuck up the investigation, Sadie understandably loses her shit and heads out on the road to work out what happened on her own and enact vengeance.
Sadie is an amazing character, tough as nails and completely compelling. It was just in the podcasts portions that my mind would start to wander a bit. I wish I could go back and forego the audio version to see how much the podcast portion would have worked for me in that format. You may like this if you like Veronica Mars. There are a lot of similarities in the kind of story being told.
Lots of trigger warnings, pretty much any kind of violence against children/women you can think of.
