Little Owl’s Egg is a different take on having a new sibling. Usually they talk about how great the baby is going to be, and/or the older sibling is usually excited about the new addition.
This time, Little Owl is less than thrilled (giant, multiple Nos! clue you into this fact). To sooth a hurt Little Owl (after all Mama does not need a new Little Owl, she has them), Mama plays a game about what kind of baby she will be having. This is where Little Owl and their than keen on having a new sibling comes into the story. As Mama goes through the list, Little Owl figures out that crocodiles, elephants, dragons and such are probably not such a good idea. And by the end Little Owl is playing too by naming things outrageous only a child could probably think up and now it is Mama Owl who is saying “No.” And, of course, you know Little Owl will come around eventually to liking the idea of a sibling, and being Big Owl is going to be pretty cool.
Alison Brown’s illustrations are a nice addition to Debi Glori’s text. The illustrations are sweet. Even, cozy. Yet they are not “sleepy” and should keep your toddler’s attention. The colors have a fun combination of being bold and soft at the same time.
Having read the board book and not the traditional hardcover size, I know that both formats will work great for the needs of your Little Owl.
