There is nothing new about Dollop and Mrs. Fabulous. There is the big sister as “Mrs. Fabulous” who has her rules for the tea party she is having, the one where younger sister Dollop (so bored with her own toys and games) will ask to join. And Dollop is just Dollop and she does her own thing. If that means putting her toy-friend in time out, or herself dressing as a ninja, that is what she does. However, Mrs. Fabulous tells her sister ninjas do not belong at tea parties and Dollop changes to fit in (almost). But still, it is not as fun as she had hoped and leaves the party. And older sister Lily, realizes that without Dollop, something is not right at the party. But (of course) Lily figures out how to make it fun for both sisters and learns that having a ninja at a tea party is good after all. Or the theme of: things that do not “fit the rules” have a place, too, saves the day.
The illustrations are sweet, but again, been seen before. They are that combo of sweet and perfectly happy colors. Jennifer Sattler’s signature illustration style is all over them. They are goofy without being over the top. They are realistic but cartoonish, too. They are “feel good” illustrations.
With all that said, this is a good book. There is not a lot of modern action and just enough of a modern theme to keep you interested. If you have children who are siblings with various personalities, or a child who just like tea parties this should work for them.
