I started following Beverly Jenkins on Twitter because someone told her to “check her white privilege.” Romance twitter is fun and she is fun. (Don’t cross any of the romance authors on twitter though because they will eat you alive.) So today’s my birthday and I found out we share a birthday and it’s all very exciting.
Anyhoo, I enjoyed this book. It’s very steamy, Billie is a whore and Andrew is an attorney and land owner. That’s certainly one way to work in more sex scenes in a historical without having a wedding. Their chemistry is great, and I really loved Billie as a character. She’s completely unapologetic about who she is. She has fighting skills that make sense for someone her size. She has a child, and when the whorehouse owner’s son, Prince, threatens to take him away, she flees to be with Drew’s family. There’s a little bit of voodoo in the story which was fun too.
I liked his family a lot, especially Drew’s mother. Her romance with Max is sweet, and I love how real her character felt. I also really appreciated that Billie has female friends, Mariah is the wife of Drew’s brother, and I liked her. Logan was kind of a jerk at first, but I will still check out the first book in the series, which I haven’t read yet. Drew and Billie’s son is cute and not just a plot device. He reads like an actual toddler, not the tool to get his parents together. They did just fine themselves with that!
I enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading more of Beverly Jenkins’s writing.
