The story of The Snow Rabbit is predictable. One grumpy bear and one small rabbit determined to make the bear not grumpy. A show of friendship by the rabbit that takes an odd turn. And finally, friendship between the bear and other animals of the neighborhood. Yet, there is nothing wrong with that. It is still a cute story about the important subject of making friends, despite there is little new in Georgiana Deutsch’s story. As I said, it is predictable as we have seen it before. Do you like that kind of story? Then you will like this one.
I do not seem to be familiar with Deutsch’s work, however, Edgson is quite prolific. Their signature style is all over the place! The cute big eyes, the adorable smiles, the fluffy furriness they are all here.
And it is Alison Edgson’s illustrations and their delightful touches that make the save. They are just very “happy and sweet” throughout the book. And even though Bear is grumpy all the time, you know that it will be “okay” and work out in the end because everything is just so darn perfectly cute.
This sugariness can be a bit too much, but the child listener will be taken by the (dare I say it?) curtness! Though a word to the wise, just watch out for the glitter bombs that pop up every so often. However, they pair well with the text of Deutsch. They both are soft, bold and bright and flow together nicely.
