Hi! This is my first Cannonball book. I hope it doesn’t suck and isn’t all about me, but humor me and let me start briefly from that standpoint:
I’m a Drew Magary fan. Of his posts from Deadspin. I even listen to the Deadcast podcast because he hosts it and his frat boy like dulcet tones put me to a contented sleep. I think he’s funny. (I think he’s funny?! Oh goodness, this is going to be a review as if Ron Swanson wrote it.) I’ve never read a book of his, and while he’s on hiatus because of his accident, I figured why not combine the two and listen to an audiobook written and narrated by him. This is the only one.
Bookended by the premature birth and recovery of his third child, Someone Could Get Hurt is otherwise a lighthearted book about Magary’s other children’s antics. They are fun stories, but mostly fluff especially compared to the deeply personal reflections Magary has when he recounts the news of his newborn’s operation and the subsequent premature baby ward he is sent off to. It’s really moving. But such a tonal shift from the rest of the book, which has a story about his other kids being bratty at an amusement park, for example. The only other story that packs close to as an emotional of a punch is when Margary recalls his boneheaded DUI incident and the impact it had on his family.
- In conclusion, if you can read or listen to the first and last chapters of this book, you’ll know why I am fan of Drew Magary in general. I don’t know, I don’t want to give spoilers and I don’t have kids. Thanks! I’ll be better next time, promise.
