When you have high hopes for a book and it shatters your heart like your Grandmother’s Depression Glass, you are in bad shape.
And yes, that is hyperbole, yet this whole book seems to be that extremeness of trying to be clever and only getting part way there. We know the story of the “Pretty Pony” and the “Not nice Pony” and we know the fact that there is a favorite girl who comes to see the Pretty Pony and one who is less than the favorite.
Then you get the twist. Yes, friends, Snow Pony has an uncanny resemblance to another Snow character will dark tresses and ivory skin. And not so subtle as if you missed it, Christian Trimmer makes sure you are told that Snow Pony’s adventure in the woods is familiar to her, like a story her human friend once told her (of course, there is that title, too).
However, Jessie Sima has come to my rescue with her fantastically charming, brightly colored and bold artwork. It is just as over the top as the text with details covering every page. Here is where some adult humor will come in (the emojis over the mini-pony heads is a treat) and we get to see what a tax attorney mini-pony looks like.
Snow Pony and the Seven Miniature Ponies has its moments. There are some funny lines, some tension for the child reader/listener, yet, I do not see the adults wanted to add this to their own collections too soon. If you have a child just mad about horses (ages 5 to 8) it will be the horses pjs and one hay-ride you are not going to want to miss.
