This Is a Taco! It might look like a squirrel, but it is a taco. Well, its name is Taco and he LOVES easting tacos. So much in fact, the only reason he agreed to do this book is not, so you the reader could learn about squirrels, but so he could get and eat tacos. However, he quickly learns that there are no tacos and that hawks are a squirrel’s worse enemy (I would think it would
be getting taco sauce on your silky fur, but then again, I am not a squirrel, so what do I know?)
Andrew Cangelose has created a quirky story about squirrels and how one clever rodent learns quickly how to save himself the trouble of being eaten by a hawk and he becomes able to start eating tacos! There are some facts about squirrels that you may or may not know, but it is not a science book. It is about a squirrely squirrel who learns the power of a pen and how one must be careful of how you word things.
What is interesting is the simplicity with the artwork, but still it is contains a deal of details. Josh Shipley has pair the artwork perfectly with an easy read. The beginning reader might not be able to solo read, but a stronger reader should be fine. And it is perfect for a read-aloud.
This is not going to be for everyone. There is some “sassiness” that people will not relate to, but over all this should be a hit for a modern audience. The author and illustrator have also collaborated on This Is a Whoopsie!
