This is the fourth book in a series I started at number three. I did go back and read one and two after three though! And then on to four. I like this character – Sheriff Walt Fleming, and the supporting characters – Brandon (the sheriff’s right hand man who is dating his ex wife), Fiona (the crime scene reporter who Walt is in love with), and Beatrice (the lovable dog). You know I’m a sucker for a dog, and she’s a good one! She’s very well trained, and she can track people. She got hurt at the end of this book, and I nearly flung it across the room, but they told us within a page that she was ok. She just got some pointy grass in her paw.
Anyway, Fiona saves a kid in a river, and her face gets plastered on newspapers, which she didn’t want. She has a secret, and she won’t even tell Walt. Then people start getting murdered. There’s a woman in California who gets shot, then a former football player who gets his head bashed in, and Fiona whacks her head and can’t remember anything.
There’s a part where Fiona is kinda sorta maybe almost accused of murdering the football player, because it turns out she knows him, and also his body is found not too far from her house, and it’s on the night she got the head injury. I liked the way this all played out, but some of it could’ve been sped up (obvs that’s not the point of a book – I’d be a terrible writer) if people just talked to each other, but I guess that’s most books (and also life).
