This is for my backlog CBR square because I bought it at the same time as my white whale about three years ago, and despite being a tenth of the size it took me about as long to finish.
This was such a letdown; this book was booooooring. I really wanted a fun book with an “Ask a Manager” vibe, as I enjoy true life tales of mundane absurdity from the hoi polloi. A few contributors have since gone on to bigger things, there are politicians and CEOs who’ve added stories, so you’d think there would be some wild stories or personal touches. This was the reading equivalent of a day in a cubicle instead. I’m truly struggling to remember a single interesting story. One person worked at a sandwich shop and realized that just because someone is kind to customers doesn’t mean they’ll be a good boss. An ice cream scooper learns that you can’t close up shop early. Real dramatic stuff here.
If nothing else, this is a cautionary tale that I insist on repeating to myself: just because a book is cheap doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a good deal. Read through remaindered books a bit closer before purchase.
