With permission, I have borrowed this line from a Goodreads review (but not this book): “I don’t think that I have any coherent thoughts at the moment.”
I feel the same way about The Sun is Kind of a Big Deal. Not because it is sweet or thoughtful, but because I was laughing too hard to think!
You ask, “Did she say laughing?” Yes, I was laughing so hard I thought I was going to fall out of my chair! “Is it really that funny?” Yes, it is that funny! Of course, the fact that the sun wears sunglasses, and there is a planet that wears a headband and Jupiter is gassy is funny; but they are all tied into making the facts funny, too. I mean they are facts, but have you ever laughed at real facts? Not some “OMG these are so obvious fake that I can’t believe anyone believes it” kind of laughing, but laughing in a way that learning is fun? And realizing that Science can be interesting and easy to learn? I am well past my elementary school years, but I still cringe at the word Science. But had I had this book? Science and me probably could have been friendly.
There so much great pieces of information and several wonderful extras as you go along There is no way to grasp all of it at once. Even when it is over it keeps going. The poet in me says this is a metaphor about the universe. The more practical side of me says there is just too much information to fit in a picture book. Author/illustrator Nick Suluk has created a book that is great for many ages as it can grow with your child. I wish I could give this book a rating higher than five and I will! This book is a 9.9 as nothing is perfect!
