My special needs cousin loved the Who Would Win series. It was a tough read at the time, but it got a struggling student/child/reader to want books. (I gladly gave him what books he did not have for a Christmas gift, because, YAY! Books!) I picked up Komodo Dragon vs. King Cobra and wondered what took me so long to find them? (But I think the author picked the wrong winner!)
Who Would Win puts two animals together that would not seem like they would be a match. A Komodo Dragon and a King Cobra, in this case. Looking at them, your first thought would be “Dragon for the win.” And all the facts leading up to that proves you right. However, at the end, the author gives a case to why the King Cobra would be a winner. However, author, Jerry Pallotta leaves enough room to let you know that it is possible for the dragon to be winner at another time (just not this particular Komodo Dragon).
The facts are amazingly simple but fascinating. I have no interest in Komodo Dragons or King Cobras. But I could not put it down. Not 40 pages but this was something I would reread just to see what I missed. There is a lot packed on each page. The “facts” we know might not be factual at all. The photographs and illustrations are fun. There are questions throughout as well allowing you to make this not only as a fun “alone time read” but used in the classroom as well.
Some currently in the series are: Whale vs. Giant Squid; Killer Whale vs. Great White Shark; Hammerhead vs. Bull Shark; Tyrannosaurus Rex vs. Velociraptor; Lion vs. Tiger; Tarantula vs. Scorpion and Polar Bear vs. Grizzly Bear.
