White Whale!
Timeless: Diego and the Rangers of the Vastlantic is the result if The Invention of Hugo Cabret meet Steampunk with “something else” that I cannot put my finger on. Armand Baltazar has mixed fantasy, realism and adventure that surrounds our hero Diego and his friends. When different times (past present and a little of the future) have clashed together causing a brand-new world, the different factions fight over to create their own order in this not always safe world. However, when five kids from different parts of this new world their adventures include fighting pirates, dinosaurs, World War Two planes and sometimes even each other. If they can combine their talents, they might not only save themselves, but their world as well. This is the first in this author/artists Timeless series.
This is my White Whale because I started reading this almost a year ago. I reviewed it for our store newsletter without having finished it. I read enough and drooled over the illustrations enough to know what the story was about and knew enough about it to know that it was going to be good. In fact, better than good. I finally found it again and started reading again a few weeks ago. It takes a bit sometimes to get through it as there is a lot going on. The ages 10 and up will love this book. You need to read the art as well to get some things as well as extras that are not in the text.
I have a reader copy of Timeless and have seen some of the full colored finished art. However, the black and white (art not final) are AMAZING on their own. This book is worth the time and reading just for them.
