It’s been a year since the events of One Salt Sea, and Toby is not a good place, having lost her lover (to death), her child (to the Changeling’s choice) and her know (although she gave that up willingly). Her friends are concerned that she has some sort of death wish – and that’s not made any easier when Etienne pitches up asking for her help.
Etienne hasn’t always been as strait-laced as he seems, and 16 years ago got involved with a human who happened to get pregnant. And now his daughter has not only been apparently kidnapped, she’s also punching walls through Faerie in her haste to escape, endangering everyone. And so Toby sets off in pursuit, backed up by the ever awesome Tybalt. However, Tybalt has problems of his own, which won’t quite wait for Toby’s quest to be finished, which is how they also find themselves in the middle of an attempted coup.
But most importantly to me, this is also the book where Toby and Tybalt finally come clean about their feelings for one another, with lots of kissing ensuing on their parts, and lots of squealing on mine.
I’m continuing to love these books, with each one widening the world we know, as well as slowly revealing more about Toby and her powers (which are sometimes just as much of a mystery to Toby as they are to us, what with her being one of the first of her kind). I love the way McGuire takes established myths and works them into her story, as well as letting us see the slow build of Toby’s friendships.
I can’t see my love fading any time soon, especially now I have my wish of of Toby and Tybalt being together – I can’t wait to see where that takes us next.
